Money saving hacks for online shopping

It’s very rare that shopping on the high street is anyone’s first choice. When given the option, we would prefer to be able to shop from the comfort of our homes, or while we’re on the go, or at work, then have to spend the day walking around the town centre with a list of things that we need to buy. However, not everyone knows the best ways to find a good deal online, and it can often leave you at the checkout wondering whether or not to make that purchase. This article will clue you in on some of the best ways to save money online.

Buy in the middle of the week. Companies often start sales and offer discounts midweek to boost sales, because this is usually the quietest time for them. Nothing draws a customer in more than a sale, or the option to get money off of their purchase.

Newsletters are one of the best ways to pick up discounts and coupons from a retailer. It may seem tedious to have a bunch of emails coming in every week from different websites, but you can clean up your inbox by setting a rule that all emails with the word “sale” or “newsletter” go to a designated inbox folder. That way, you can keep track of what you’re being sent, you’ll always know when there’s a sale happening, and your newsletters won’t hide any important emails that might get lost among the masses.

A trick that works well on a lot of websites and apps is leaving items in your basket. Playing hard to get with your retailer can actually work in your favour, because the programming for the site can tell you’ve left the site with items that haven’t been checked out, and the retailer wants you to buy those items. You’ll usually get a notification, or an email reminder, enticing you back with the offer of a small percentage taken off of the purchase. Remember that this trick only works if you’re logged in to your account, and won’t take effect during days when big sales are on – like Black Friday.

Check cashback sites. There are several sites that you can sign up to which offer cashback with your purchases. All you have to do is search for the retailer through the cashback site first, and then click through the site’s link to make your purchase. You’ll be surprised how much money you can earn back this way, and it adds up over the year.

Make sure you input your birthday on all of your accounts and reward apps. A huge number of retailers offer birthday freebies and discounts, and birthday vouchers usually have longer expiration dates than standard discount vouchers.

If you have some time on your hands, a good way to avoid shipping costs is using in-store pickup options, or, shop on a day where the deal is free shipping. You should also check the retailer’s app, if they have one, because the app is often more rewarding than the website.
